Katie Couric’s Disastrous Date With Larry King

Katie Couric

Katie mocks Larry driving his Lincoln Town Car.

Katie, 56, to an incredulous Jimmy Kimmel, on her one and only date with Larry King, now 79, after his quintuple heart bypass surgery in 1987 following a heart attack.

Katie Couric

Katie was a reporter at NBC’s DC TV station in 1987.

“I was about 30 years old and I was going through this period in my life that I was going, ‘I’m gonna go out with anyone who asks me because you learn something every time you go out with a new person.’ So I met Larry at this restaurant in Washington. And what can I say? I was wearing a leather skirt. He called me and he asked me out to dinner. So he picks me up at my apartment. He had a Lincoln Town Car. So I get in the Lincoln Town Car and he puts the tape deck, and it’s Jack Jones and ‘I’m a singer’ and we’re driving and we go to K Street. So we go to K Street to this Italian restaurant. … We’re driving home and I see we’re going over Memorial Bridge and that’s not the way back to my apartment. So I go ‘Larry, where are we going?’ He goes, ‘My place.’ I was only thirty and I couldn’t figure how to extricate myself from it. We walk in. It’s covered with proclamations. Keys to every city in the country. That was sexy.”

“So we sat there. What can I say? He lunged. And I started laughing a little bit because the whole situation was like out of a bad Lifetime movie. So I said, ‘Larry, you’re such an interesting, nice man, but I would like to meet someone a little closer to my age.”

Kimmel: “Someone from the Paleolithic era.”

Katie: “And he said, ‘That’s okay because when I like I really like.’ Larry has no memory of any of this. He tells a story that we were going to go upstairs but I had a roommate. I didn’t have a roommate.”

Kimmel: “He is a sly devil.”

The UK Daily Mail unearths Larry‘s 2009 Katie date recollection:

“We went out to dinner, a nice Italian restaurant, we drove home, thought we were kind of romantic, we get to her door, in the apartment house and she said, ‘Oh, i have a roommate.'”

‘Then I kissed her goodnight and that was that. And we became friends ever since.”

The National Enquirer is salivating over Katie‘s date with “creepy” Larry.

The Enquirer is salivating?  NOW I find out!  They pay big bucks!  The old Mutual Radio crew had heard this story (Larry’s version, although we figured there might be “more” to it–like, the truth).

Two words:  Sandy Koufax.  Larry is a serial prevaricator.  Period.  From what I’ve heard, Katie’s date experience was Larry’s M.O.

Well, we know it wasn’t Larry that got her promoted to the big leagues.

      Wonder who she did bang?

I remember when she was on WRC in DC. Billed herself as Katharine Couric. She got her start on ABC’s assignment desk, then same gig at CNN. Got on air at NBC’s station in Miami, then back to DC at NBC’ O & O. Then NBC.
I haven’t heard anything about her personal life back then.

I was dating a woman in the early 90’s who lived at 4707 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC, and who lived just down the 5th floor hall from Katie and Jay.  I first met Katie and Jay at my girlfriend’s Halloween Party, 1990.  Katie (yes, Katherine at the time) actually got on the air once at CNN, before CNN #2 Reese Schoenfeld personally issued the edict that Couric was never to be back on the air there.  She rebounded nicely at WPLG-TV, Miami, then WRC-TV Washington.  Katie dated a number of folks in the area (she grew up in nearby Arlington, VA) but, as far as I know, few were media connected.  Most were lawyer types like Jay Monihan.  Oh, while at the ABC assignment desk, a fellow gopher was future Larry King producer Wendy Walker.  And one day at ABC she angered one of their stars, which prompted the star, Sam Donaldson, to jump up ON HER DESK and lean down at her, screaming.

Yeah, that story bears repeating.  Larry, over the years, told, again and again how he grew up with future all-star baseball pitcher Sandy Koufax as one of his bosom buddies.  He told story after story of himself, Herb Cohen, Sandy, and others, in various Bowery Boys type adventures.  Years later, the Washington Post Magazine, doing a profile on Koufax, asked him to tell of Larry King and his youth.  And Koufax said he never knew Larry til they were both successful and well past high school.  Granted, the pair went to high school together, but it was a large school, and what apparently happened was that Larry knew of Sandy and fantasized about the popular jock being a friend.  The stories grew and, after a while, Larry had invested a lot in the lie.  It so happened that I had lunch with Larry the very week this story came out, and I asked him about it.  Larry’s reply:  “I always said my stories were composites”.  !!!!  I bit my tongue and didn’t ask, “Composites?  Of what?  Lies?”.

‘I’m gonna go out with anyone who asks me because you learn something every time you go out with a new person.’

Well, she should have picked a date up at the local high school, that would have been the age group she digs.

She had to justify going out with indiscriminate skirt-chaser Larry.  It’s a lame excuse.  He was a celebrity; she was just a local TV reporter.

Hmmm; one event with differing stories.  So typical of the media.

Larry is not known for verisimilitude.

Translation – I was 30 and my career was going no where.  I made up my mind to sleep with anything that had a temperature close to 98.6 in order to get a head (pun intended) – even Larry King.

I wonder what the real story is. Larry was getting to be a star in 1987 on the way to fame in the 1992 prez election. Read Ross Perot. Via BlackBerry
