ABC’s 20/20 anchor’s vision is 20/20 with CNN’s Jeff Zucker. Zucker‘s blowing out CNN’s disastrous morning show for Chris Cuomo and Erin Burnett. Cuomo was Good Morning America’s news anchor for three years. Read the CNN press release.
Huff Post: “Also on Tuesday, pundits James Carville, Mary Matalin and Erik Erickson all parted ways with the company. And managing editor Mark Whitaker announced his departure.”
NYP on Zucker: “He is all over everyone at the network,” said one source. “He is e-mailing everyone, around the clock, the anchors, the control rooms, he has inserted himself into everything. It is great for the network.”
Anderson Cooper learned his show will no longer be repeated in prime time. Cuomo is expected to be joined by Erin Burnett on a new morning show. She is, however, contracted to prime time, and a source says, “They’ll have to throw a bucket of money at her to go to the morning.” And Soledad O’Brien has been promised a role in prime time.
NYP: ABC News’ Chris Cuomo is defecting to CNN — and will take on “Today” and “Good Morning America” with a revamped new morning show he’ll host alongside the network’s Erin Burnett, Page Six has learned. We hear that new CNN chief Jeff Zucker has succeeded in signing Cuomo, who co-hosts “20/20” with Elizabeth Vargas and is also ABC’s chief legal correspondent and the brother of Gov. Andrew Cuomo. We first reported that Zucker was eyeing Cuomo and has been “looking for an anchor he can basically make the centerpiece of the network.” He has also poached ABC’s senior White House correspondent Jake Tapper. And, as we previously reported, Zucker also has his eye on former “Today” co-host Ann Curry, who is still tied to an NBC contract but has been stopped from doing live interviews. We also hear Zucker has been scouting top print and digital reporters in Los Angeles to beef up CNN’s Hollywood reporting. Reps for CNN and Cuomo were not available for comment last night.
ABC News prez Ben Sherwood quickly replaced Cuomo with David Muir. Press release:
Starting today David Muir will join Elizabeth Vargas as co-anchor while continuing to anchor “World News” on the weekends and to substitute for Diane and report during the week.
For the last two years David has appeared on air more often than any correspondent at any news division, reporting from Tahrir Square to Fukushima to Tucson to Aurora.
David has been an authoritative presence at the anchor desk
Chris has been a unique voice at the anchor desk and a valued colleague and friend. We’ll miss his energy, commitment and humor and we wish him the very best in this new venture.
